Be Prepared: Scenario Planning for the Election

This virtual Election Scenario Planning Session is for Chief Student Affairs Officers and Chief Academic Officers from the 39 campus membership of North Carolina Campus Compact.  The gathering is co-hosted by NC Campus Compact and Dr. Jon Dooley, Vice President for Student Life, Elon University. This election is one of the most contentious in recent memory. There is strong potential that the results will be contested which is likely to provoke a strong reaction from both sides of the political spectrum. This session is intended to help administrators prepare for multiple potential scenarios both leading up to the election and beyond. The planning framework is based on one created by the National Conference on Citizenship. This is an invitation only event. If you have questions, please contact Leslie Garvin, Executive Director.

Depolarizing Within Workshop for Students

NC Campus Compact and the Braver Angels Alliance of Central North Carolina are teaming up to host two "Depolarizing Within" workshops.  This workshop is for students only. This free workshop will help you become more aware of your "inner polarizer" and learn a useful method for disagreeing with others About this Event Much of today’s polarization is driven by how we talk with like-minded people about those on the other side. Too often, we stereotype, dismiss, or ridicule our fellow citizens who support the other political party, its leaders, and its policies. This free, two-hour workshop helps participants become more aware of their own "inner polarizer." It teaches how to be critical without demonizing, dismissing, or stereotyping large swaths of the population. And it offers strategies for intervening constructively in social conversations with like-minded peers when these conversations veer into contempt and ridicule for people who hold other political views. Engaged Scholar Writing Retreat

Are you teaching an engaged pedagogy such as service-learning, community-based research, or participatory action research and working to advance your scholarship? Does your research include community partners? Do you want to explore ways to connect with North Carolina faculty and administrators who are working on community-engaged scholarship? Join other engaged scholars in the third annual writing retreat. The retreat includes time for writing as well as discussions on writing strategies and a conversation with engaged scholar Dr. Keisha Bentley-Edwards. Dr. Bentley-Edwards studies how race, racial socialization, and racism affect the health and well-being of children and adults. Her work has been published in scholarly journals and featured in a range of local and national media outlets. Bring a writing project that you want to work on, at any stage of completion. Bring it to the Table Viewing, Discussion, and Demonstration

As part of the NC Collegiate Citizenship Project's Virtual Introductory Dialogue Series, NC Campus Compact will feature Bring It to the Table.  The event includes a film screening of the documentary, an audience Q&A with the Executive Director, Julie Winokur, as well as a demonstration table talk, and a group interactive exercise that will teach the Table Talk method for civil discourse and active listening. The 10th Anniversary Presidents Forum, hosted by President Connie Book, Elon University, welcomes all North Carolina presidents for conversations on the role university leaders play in developing and institutionalizing higher education community and civic engagement. As 2020 is a presidential election year, Dr. Jennifer Domagal-Goldman, Executive Director of the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge, will discuss "Higher Education's Role in Cultivating Democratic Engagement." Dr. Jenna Robinson, President of The James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal, will discuss "Policy Solutions to the Critical Issues in Higher Education." Her talk will be followed by a panel of retired presidents moderated by Davidson College President, Carol Quillen. The panelists are Leo M. Lambert, President Emeritus, Elon University; Randy Parker, former President, Guilford Technical Community College; and Kenneth Peacock, former Chancellor, Appalachian State University. 2020 Civic Engagement Institute February 11, 2020 at Elon University “Engagement 2.0: Civics, Civility, and Civil Discourse” Campus teams from NC Campus Compact member institutions are invited to participate in a day of immersive learning. Attendees will select two methods that promote dialogue, deliberation, and civil discourse.  They will take a deep dive into these methods and gain skills to implement them within their own campus and community.
