ACC’s Trotter 2020 Engaged Faculty Scholar
This month, Ms. Julie Trotter, Alamance Community College (ACC), begins her one-year term as a North Carolina Campus Compact Engaged Faculty Scholar. Trotter is the first community college representative selected for this prestigious role since the program began in 2015.
While the program is designed for the Scholar to propose and undertake a project to deepen the scholarship of campus-community engagement at their respective institution, the selection committee was especially impressed by the potential for Trotter’s project to influence the NC Community College System more broadly.
Trotter has participated in and promoted engaged learning for many years, first as a non-profit professional, and now as an English and Humanities professor at Alamance Community College where she has integrated participatory action research into her courses. She has also served on several committees at ACC seeking to improve engaged learning, civic involvement and service learning within the classroom. She has also presented at community college conferences throughout the southeast on the same topics.
As an Engaged Faculty Scholar, Trotter will curate resources for student research and engagement customized to fit the community college faculty’s workload and the community college student demographics. Her goal is to develop a Guidebook on Engaged Student Research that will be accessible to both faculty advisors and students at ACC and throughout the entire 57 NC Community College System. Additionally she will support ACC’s Guided Pathways Essential Practices: Scale of Adoption Self-Assessment plan which seeks to provide opportunities to students to apply and deepen knowledge and skills through projects, internships, co-ops, clinical placements, group projects outside of class, service learning, study abroad and other active learning activities that faculty intentionally embed into their coursework. Finally she will provide a professional development workshop on student engagement and student research projects for ACC’s Fall and Spring cycle of faculty professional development. In her proposal Trotter outlines the need for such a guide in the community college setting and states her desire that it will “Serve as an important catalyst to student research and civic engagement within ACC and within the other 57 community colleges.”
Trotter also serves as co-advisor of Carolina Student Transfer Excellence Program (C-STEP), advisor to the International club, and advisor to student research teams who are current/past recipients of a NC Space Grant. Trotter is an active member of several state and national community college professional organization and was recognized by the National Society for Leadership and Success for outstanding teaching in 2014 and for her outstanding service to the North Carolina Conference of English Instructors in 2015. She was selected to serve on the National Humanities Center Teacher Advisory Council for 2018-19 and serves on UNC-Chapel Hill’s Career Advisory Network and as a liaison to the Community College Humanities Association. Trotter received her BA degree from UNC – Chapel Hill and her MA degree from North Carolina State University.
Engaged Faculty Scholars receive a stipend of $1,500 and additional funds for professional development.
